Fernando de Noronha
A protected Atlantic island of bays, dolphins, and a daily limit on visitors.
Fernando de Noronha is a small island far off Brazil's coast, and it is run like a place that knows it is fragile. Baía do Sancho is the famous beach, reached by a ladder in the rock. The water is extraordinary. The number of people allowed on the island is not an accident.

A Fernando de Noronha itinerary

Field guide
This is a small island with a daily fee and a limited bed count. Book the room and the permits together, and then slow down.
When to go
August to November is drier and the sea is generally kinder. The rainy months are lush and can close a boat. The water is warm year-round. The island is not a spontaneous weekend.
The beach
Sancho is regularly among the most beautiful beaches people argue about, and the way down is a ladder that is not for everyone. Porcos and Americano are the neighboring drama. Some beaches alternate by day between visitors and wildlife. The rules are the product.
In the water
Snorkeling and a careful dive are the reason a lot of people pay the fee. Turtles and spinner dolphins are residents, not a show. Keep the distance a guide asks for, which will be more than you want in the moment. The reward is that they are still there.
Pack this in your notes
- Flights are limited and the environmental fee is paid on top of the room.
- A buggy is the local car. Walking the main road is a sunburn.
- Portuguese helps. English is not the assumption.
- One beautiful beach a day is the right number.

10/10The water is the itinerary in Fernando de Noronha
A snorkel with a guide who cares about the turtles. A sunset from a fort rather than a playlist. In Brazil the color of the water does more work than any hotel list. A protected Atlantic island of bays, dolphins, and a daily limit on visitors.

8/10Fernando de Noronha in August–November for drier weather and calmer seas
Baía dos Porcos from the viewpoint and, if allowed, the water. Best window from where I sat: August–November for drier weather and calmer seas. I would not trade this coast for a busier island.

6/10The water is the itinerary in Fernando de Noronha
Sancho early, via the ladder. Baía dos Porcos from the viewpoint and, if allowed, the water. In Brazil the color of the water does more work than any hotel list. A protected Atlantic island of bays, dolphins, and a daily limit on visitors.
