Great Sand Dunes National Park
The tallest dunes in North America, backed by the Sangre de Cristos.
Medano Creek in late spring turns the dunes into a beach. Otherwise it is a climb on shifting sand and a sky full of stars. Bring a sandboard if you like falling with style Colorado.

Field guide
Great Sand Dunes National Park is a U.S. National Park in Colorado. The tallest dunes in North America, backed by the Sangre de Cristos.
When to go
May–June for the creek; September for cooler sand is the window most visitors aim for. Shoulder seasons mean fewer cars at trailheads. Winter can close roads; summer can fill parking lots by 8 a.m. Check NPS alerts the night before you drive in.
How to see it
Start with high Dune climb in the cool hours. Then medano Creek splash in late spring. If you have a second day, sunset on the dune field. Keep one spare hour for a stargazing hour after the lot empties.
Park practicalities
An America the Beautiful pass covers entry at most national parks. Timed-entry reservations are used at several busy parks in peak season — book those before lodging. Wildlife has the right of way; 25 yards from most animals, 100 yards from bears and wolves.
Pack this in your notes
- Sand gets brutal by midday. Start walks at dawn or after 5 p.m.
- Download offline maps. Cell service drops in most parks.
- Bring layers. Elevation and wind change the day faster than the forecast.
- Enter the park early. Famous lots and shuttles fill first.

10/10Start early in Great Sand Dunes National Park
Sunset on the dune field. A stargazing hour after the lot empties. Give Great Sand Dunes National Park days, not hours, and go in May–June for the creek; September for cooler sand. The trailhead line is the tax; the quiet after it is the park.

8/10Great Sand Dunes National Park is bigger than the postcard
Medano Creek splash in late spring. The tallest dunes in North America, backed by the Sangre de Cristos. Crowds thin if you are moving at first light. May–June for the creek; September for cooler sand is the window I would book again.
