Field guide

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a U.S. National Park in North Carolina and Tennessee. The most-visited U.S. national park, for the fog and the forests.

When to go

April–May for wildflowers; mid-October for color if you accept cars is the window most visitors aim for. Shoulder seasons mean fewer cars at trailheads. Winter can close roads; summer can fill parking lots by 8 a.m. Check NPS alerts the night before you drive in.

How to see it

Start with cades Cove at opening, not noon. Then alum Cave or Chimney Tops if conditions allow. If you have a second day, newfound Gap and a walk on the AT. Keep one spare hour for a quieter cove or waterfall on the North Carolina side.

Park practicalities

An America the Beautiful pass covers entry at most national parks. Timed-entry reservations are used at several busy parks in peak season — book those before lodging. Wildlife has the right of way; 25 yards from most animals, 100 yards from bears and wolves.

Pack this in your notes

  • No entrance fee, but parking tags are required. Gatlinburg is convenient and loud.
  • Download offline maps. Cell service drops in most parks.
  • Bring layers. Elevation and wind change the day faster than the forecast.
  • Enter the park early. Famous lots and shuttles fill first.

Cades Cove at opening

By 10 the loop was a parking lot. At 7 it was fog and turkeys. Worth the early coffee.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is bigger than the postcard

Alum Cave or Chimney Tops if conditions allow. The most-visited U.S. national park, for the fog and the forests. Crowds thin if you are moving at first light. April–May for wildflowers; mid-October for color if you accept cars is the window I would book again.

Start early in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Cades Cove at opening, not noon. Alum Cave or Chimney Tops if conditions allow. Give Great Smoky Mountains National Park days, not hours, and go in April–May for wildflowers; mid-October for color if you accept cars. The trailhead line is the tax; the quiet after it is the park.
