Guangzhou
The Cantonese capital, where dim sum is a way of spending the morning.
Guangzhou is a river port that taught a lot of the world what it thinks Chinese food is, then kept the better version at home. Come for dim sum, the river, and a commercial city that is older and more appetizing than its skyline suggests.

Field guide
If you do nothing else, do dim sum properly. Guangzhou is a food city first. The sights are the bonus.
When to go
The dry, cooler months from November to March are the time to walk. Summer is very hot, wet, and typhoon-aware. Spring is humid. The lunar new year is a family holiday and some kitchens close.
Neighborhoods
Shamian for a colonial-era stroll that is small and pleasant. Beijing Road and the older commercial streets for the bustle. The river promenade at night. Residential restaurants in Tianhe and Liwan will feed you better than a hotel on the island.
Eating
Dim sum, roast goose, a claypot, and a clear soup that is not an afterthought. Cantonese cooking is about freshness and timing. Go where families are, mid-morning, and do not expect dinner to be the important meal.
Pack this in your notes
- Dim sum is late morning, not an 8 a.m. hotel breakfast.
- Metro and a river ferry both help.
- Summer rain floods streets. Check the sky.
- Cantonese is the local language. Mandarin works, English less so.

10/10Guangzhou is a walking city
A market street for fruit and snacks. One ancestral hall or temple, then back to lunch. The Cantonese capital, where dim sum is a way of spending the morning. Eat where the room is full of locals and give Guangzhou more evenings than museums.

8/10A neighborhood week in Guangzhou
The river at night. Best stretch: November–March. China is expensive in the obvious places and generous if you leave the main square.
