Lima
A gray Pacific capital that became one of the world's dining cities.
Lima is mist, cliffs over a cold ocean, and restaurants that reworked Peruvian food in public. See the historic center. Then eat. The coast path is the walk. The ceviche is not a cliché if you are in the right room.

Field guide
Do not treat Lima as a layover you tolerate. It is a food city with a difficult sky and a good coast.
When to go
December to April is warmer and clearer. The rest of the year the garúa, a coastal mist, can sit on the city for weeks. It is gloomy and it is normal. Summer weekends fill the waterfront.
Neighborhoods
Miraflores for the cliffs and an easy base. Barranco for the evening. The historic center by day for the churches and the squares. A hotel in the center is atmospheric and noisier. The neighborhoods by the sea are why most visitors stay.
Eating
Ceviche at midday, causas, and a tasting menu only if you want one. The range is Nikkei, criollo, and Chinese-Peruvian rooms that are institutions. Book the famous tables. Eat the casual ceviche where the fish is the point.
Pack this in your notes
- Ceviche is a lunch. Stomachs prefer it that way.
- The coast is cliffs, not a swimming beach in the city.
- Ride apps work.
- The mist is not pollution by default. It is the season.

10/10Lima is a walking city
The cliffside path in Miraflores or Barranco. One serious dinner you booked. A gray Pacific capital that became one of the world's dining cities. Eat where the room is full of locals and give Lima more evenings than museums.

8/10A neighborhood week in Lima
The historic center with a plan. Best stretch: December–April. Peru is expensive in the obvious places and generous if you leave the main square.
