North Cascades National Park
The American Alps, with fewer people than the name deserves.
Highway 20 is the approach, not the park interior. Diablo and Ross Lakes, cascade glaciers, and trailheads that still feel like trailheads. It is rugged and often smoky in late summer Washington.

Field guide
North Cascades National Park is a U.S. National Park in Washington. The American Alps, with fewer people than the name deserves.
When to go
July–September when Highway 20 is open is the window most visitors aim for. Shoulder seasons mean fewer cars at trailheads. Winter can close roads; summer can fill parking lots by 8 a.m. Check NPS alerts the night before you drive in.
How to see it
Start with diablo Lake Overlook. Then cascade Pass if you can get a parking spot. If you have a second day, ross Lake in a boat or on a long walk. Keep one spare hour for washington Pass as the scenic extra.
Park practicalities
An America the Beautiful pass covers entry at most national parks. Timed-entry reservations are used at several busy parks in peak season — book those before lodging. Wildlife has the right of way; 25 yards from most animals, 100 yards from bears and wolves.
Pack this in your notes
- The North Cascades Highway closes in winter. This is a summer-and-early-fall park.
- Download offline maps. Cell service drops in most parks.
- Bring layers. Elevation and wind change the day faster than the forecast.
- Enter the park early. Famous lots and shuttles fill first.

6/10Start early in North Cascades National Park
Diablo Lake Overlook. Cascade Pass if you can get a parking spot. Give North Cascades National Park days, not hours, and go in July–September when Highway 20 is open. The trailhead line is the tax; the quiet after it is the park.

8/10North Cascades National Park is bigger than the postcard
Cascade Pass if you can get a parking spot. The American Alps, with fewer people than the name deserves. Crowds thin if you are moving at first light. July–September when Highway 20 is open is the window I would book again.
