Santorini
Caldera light, whitewashed villages, and sunsets that earned the hype.
Santorini is a postcard that is still worth the flight if you time it. Oia at sunset is a crowd; the caldera at 8 a.m. is yours. Stay in Fira, Imerovigli, or a quieter village, swim at a black-sand beach, and eat fish that was in the water that morning.

A Santorini itinerary
Tell us how long you have. If a SpaceXAI key is configured, Grok writes the plan. Otherwise you get an editor-built outline from the field guide.
Field guide
The island is small. Two or three nights is enough. The mistake is treating Oia as the whole trip.
When to go
May, June, and September have the light without the crush. July and August bring heat, prices, and cruise-ship hours. Winter is atmospheric and half-closed.
Where to stay
Imerovigli for caldera views with fewer elbows. Fira if you want buses and nightlife. Pyrgos or Emporeio if you want a village. Cave hotels are charming; check stairs if you have luggage or knees.
Beyond the dome photos
Akrotiri's Bronze Age site, a winery in the interior, a swim on the south coast, and a sunset from a quieter terrace in Imerovigli instead of the Oia castle scrum.
Pack this in your notes
- ATVs look fun and send people to clinics. Rent a car or use buses.
- Book caldera hotels early; the good ones sell out.
- Ferry or fly from Athens; the high-speed ferry can be rough.
- White buildings bounce heat. Pack a hat.

8/10Go in June, walk at 7 a.m.
Oia at sunset was a scrum. The Fira-to-Oia walk in the morning was the postcard without the elbows. Stay in Imerovigli.

10/10Santorini in May–June
A boat into the volcanic islets. Best window from where I sat: May–June, September. I would not trade this coast for a busier island.

8/10The water is the itinerary in Santorini
Caldera walk from Fira to Oia in the morning. A boat into the volcanic islets. In Greece the color of the water does more work than any hotel list. Caldera light, whitewashed villages, and sunsets that earned the hype.
