Seattle
Coffee, ferries, and a downtown that behaves once you face the water.
Seattle is a port that learned to roast coffee and still measures the day by whether you can see the mountain. Pike Place is ten minutes. The city is a ferry, a neighborhood bookstore, and oysters when the rain is doing what rain does here.

Field guide
July through September is the dry gift. The rest of the year, bring a shell and keep the plans indoors-flexible. The mountain is a bonus, not a promise.
When to go
Summer is long light and outdoor tables. Spring is flowers and showers. Fall is mushrooms and fewer cruise ships. Winter is dark by 4:30 and fine if you like museums, ramen, and weather.
Neighborhoods
Pike Place and the waterfront once. Capitol Hill for evening. Ballard for dinner and a lock walk. Fremont if you want odd and walkable. Downtown hotels are convenient and a little blank after dark.
Eating
Oysters, a bowl of pho or ramen, and salmon only if the menu tells you where it came from. The market is for grazing, not for your only meal. Coffee counts as a course.
Pack this in your notes
- A light waterproof layer lives in the bag.
- Ferries are transit, not an excursion you have to narrate.
- Hills between downtown and the neighborhoods are real.
- Link light rail covers the airport and more of the city every year.

10/10Seattle is a walking city
A neighborhood that is not downtown: Ballard or Capitol Hill. Coffee you drink where it was roasted. Coffee, ferries, and a downtown that behaves once you face the water. Eat where the room is full of locals and give Seattle more evenings than museums.

10/10A neighborhood week in Seattle
Pike Place at opening, then leave before the cruise crowds. Best stretch: July–September. United States is expensive in the obvious places and generous if you leave the main square.

8/10Seattle is a walking city
A ferry with no car, just to be on the Sound. Pike Place at opening, then leave before the cruise crowds. Coffee, ferries, and a downtown that behaves once you face the water. Eat where the room is full of locals and give Seattle more evenings than museums.
