Val Thorens

Europe's highest big ski village, at the top of the Trois Vallées.

Val Thorens is the ski resort at the top of the Trois Vallées, with the village at about 2,300 meters. It was built for snow, not for charm, and the snow is why you go. Cime Caron is the view. The skiing runs down through Les Menuires and on toward Méribel and Courchevel when you want a long day.

Field guide

Come for altitude and accept the architecture. The village is a ski tool. The terrain above it is the point.

When to go

This is the resort you book when December or April still has to ski. January is cold at 2,300 meters. February is busy. March and early April are the pleasant high-altitude weeks. Wind, not rain, is the closure. The road up from the valley is long and sometimes chained.

On the hill

Start high and ski down. The resort faces several directions, so one peak can be in cloud while another is fine. Cime Caron is a viewing platform and a steep exit; look at the run before you treat it as a cruise. The valley toward Les Menuires is the easy mileage. Crossing all the way to Courchevel and back is how groups miss the last lift. Off-piste around the glaciers needs a guide.

Village and passes

Most beds are apartments and residence hotels on the snow. Book a place on the ski side of the pedestrian streets if you can. The Trois Vallées pass is worth it for one or two expedition days; a local pass is enough if you only want Val Thorens. Groceries cost resort prices. Eat in, or book, because the good rooms are small.

Pack this in your notes

  • The village is high and built for skiing. Do not expect a medieval street.
  • It is cold in January. Pack for the top, not for the photograph.
  • Turn around before the last lift if you have skied into another valley.
  • A residence facing the slopes beats a cheaper one down the service road.

First chair at Val Thorens

A long day down the Trois Vallées with an early turnaround. The glacier sector when the weather sits on the peaks. Book the week for the snow, and go in January–April. Europe's highest big ski village, at the top of the Trois Vallées.

Val Thorens on a clear morning

Snow that is still there when lower resorts are scratching. The lift line is the tax; the run after it is the reason. January–April is the window I would book again.
