Beautiful snowy panorama of Åre's winter landscape in Sweden

A traveler's guide to Åre

Åre skis like a full resort and lives like a small town. Give the summit a weather window and enjoy the village when it does not get one.

Åre is the ski resort Sweden points to when the conversation turns serious. The village sits on the lake and the lifts climb Åreskutan. The lower mountain is friendly, the summit is not a casual stroll, and the train from Stockholm is a civilized way in. It is the Scandinavian week on this list.

When to go

February through April. Midwinter days are short, which is the honest Scandinavia booking. March and April add light and often the best snow on the upper mountain. Easter week is busy. January is colder and darker and still a real ski trip if that is the only week you have.

On the hill

The lower and middle mountain will carry an intermediate week without trouble. The summit of Åreskutan is windy, rocky when the snow is thin, and worth it when it is not. Check the top before you promise the view. There is night skiing in part of the season, which matters when the daylight is short. Marked runs are the resort. The fell above the village is not a playground once you leave them.

Village and passes

The town stretches along the lake and the train station is part of the resort, not an outlying depot. Stay near the square if you want to walk. A car helps for nothing in the center and is useful if you are combining the trip with something farther up the valley. English is widely spoken and Swedish is the language. Book dinner in holiday weeks. The train is the arrival to choose if the roads are snowing.

If you only remember this

  • February is dark at the edges of the day. March and April give the light back.
  • The summit is a weather call. The village skiing does not depend on it.
  • The train from Stockholm is the easy way in.
  • Easter week is the crowded one. Book or avoid it.
