A traveler's guide to Atlanta

Do not try to see Atlanta from a downtown sidewalk alone. The city starts when you commit to a neighborhood.

Atlanta is a capital of music, civil rights history, and food that does not stay in one cuisine. It is not a walking city in the European sense. It is a set of neighborhoods connected by trees and highways. Pick two areas and eat well.

When to go

Spring and fall are the walking weeks. Summer is hot and stormy in the afternoon. Winter is mild with sudden cold. Peach season and football season both fill restaurants.

Neighborhoods

Downtown and Sweet Auburn for history. Midtown for the park and museums. The Eastside Beltline for a stroll and a meal. Buckhead and West Midtown when dinner is the plan. The airport area is not the city.

Eating

Southern rooms, excellent international strips, and a bakery that is worth the rideshare. This is one of the country's important food cities. Act like it and leave the hotel restaurant.

If you only remember this

  • A car or a patient rideshare plan is the way.
  • MARTA is useful on a few corridors, not everywhere.
  • Afternoon thunderstorms are summer's clock.
  • Book the famous table. Atlanta dinners fill up.
