The split gate of a Balinese temple in Bali, Indonesia, with blurred flowers

A traveler's guide to Bali

Split the island. A few nights in Ubud, a few on the coast, and one slow day with no plans will beat seven nights in the same villa compound.

Bali is more than a beach club. Ubud's jungle and offerings, the north's quieter water, and the island's Hindu rhythm are the trip. Canggu and Seminyak are easy; the island gets better when you leave the scooter traffic behind.

Where to stay

Ubud for culture and walking. Canggu if you want cafes and surf. Uluwatu for cliffs and beaches. The north (Lovina, Sidemen, Munduk) if you want the island without the scene.

Temples and etiquette

Sarong and sash at temples; shoulders covered. Do not stand higher than the priest or block a ceremony for a photo. Nyepi, the day of silence, shuts the island — plan around it.

Getting around

Scooter if you can ride confidently in traffic. Private driver for temple days (easy to book by the day). The new toll road helps the airport run. Do not underestimate travel times in south Bali.

If you only remember this

  • Dry season is roughly April to October; January can be very wet.
  • Drink bottled or filtered water.
  • Temple festivals are the best free show on the island.
  • Bargain kindly at markets; prices are not personal.
