A traveler's guide to Boracay

Stay on White Beach and walk. The island does not reward a complicated itinerary.

Boracay's White Beach is the Philippine shore people picture: a few kilometers of fine sand and water that stays gentle most of the dry season. The island is small. The beach is the main street. Evenings are livelier on the south end and quieter as you walk north.

When to go

December to May is dry and the swimming season. June to November is greener, cheaper, and more likely to close a boat. The famous shoulder of January to March is also the busiest.

The beach

White Beach is divided by habit into stations, from livelier to quieter as the numbers change. The sand is very fine. Walking it is the evening plan. Puka, on the other side, is the escape hatch and a bumpier ride.

In the water

Dry-season water on White Beach is the easy swim. A paraw sail is the local boat and a good hour. Snorkeling is better from a trip off the main beach than from the busiest stretch of shore.

If you only remember this

  • Caticlan is the close airport, then a boat. Kalibo is the longer road.
  • The beach has rules about smoking and parties. They are enforced.
  • Cash and GCash both appear. Cards are for the bigger rooms.
  • Walk north at sunset if you want the same sky with fewer speakers.
