A traveler's guide to Budapest
Do the bath properly, with time. Budapest is not a city you tick. The river sets the pace.
Budapest looks imperial from the river and feels local in the courtyards. Soak. Walk the Pest side at night. Eat a long lunch. The ruin bars are a chapter, not the table of contents.
When to go
Spring and fall are lovely. Summer is hot and festival-loud, and the baths are still a good idea in the morning. Winter is for steam, Christmas markets, and the thermal water you came for anyway.
Neighborhoods
The castle district for the view, briefly. The Jewish Quarter at night if that is your scene. The area around the great market for a daytime wander. Buda's hills if you want out of the postcard. Choose a bath and commit.
Eating
Goulash is a soup. Paprika is not a gimmick. Pastries, a wine bar, and a hearty lunch will teach you more than a riverboat buffet. Book the nicer dinner. The city still keeps early kitchens in some traditional rooms.
If you only remember this
- Transit tickets are easy and the trams along the river are the tour.
- Baths have lockers, rules, and busy weekends.
- Forint prices look huge. Do the math once, then relax.
- Castle Hill is a walk or a bus, not a casual five minutes.
