A traveler's guide to Cancún
The hotel zone is the beach. Downtown is the city. Decide which one you are sleeping in before you compare room prices.
Cancún was built to be a beach. The hotel zone is a strip of sand between the Caribbean and a lagoon, and the water is the color people mean when they say Caribbean. The city inland is where the prices calm down.
When to go
December to April is dry and the reason the flights are full. Summer and early autumn bring heat, deals, and the chance of a storm.
The beach
The north end of the zone has calmer water. The south end has more wave and more reef underfoot. Public access exists between the hotels. Sargassum is a seasonal fact, not a rumor in some summers.
In the water
The lagoon is for paddling. The sea is for swimming on a calm morning. A day boat to Isla Mujeres is the easy upgrade. Snorkel trips toward Puerto Morelos are quieter than the pier.
If you only remember this
- All-inclusives are a product. À la carte Cancún is a different trip and easy to do.
- The bus along the zone works. A taxi at 1 a.m. is a negotiation.
- Reef-safe sunscreen. The water is clear enough to see what you are standing on.
- Tulum and the ruins are a day, not a detour between lunch and a show.
