A traveler's guide to Crater Lake National Park
Crater Lake National Park is a U.S. National Park in Oregon. The deepest lake in the United States, impossibly blue.
A collapsed volcano holds a lake with no rivers in or out. Rim Drive is the lap. Wizard Island boat tours run in a short summer. Snow can linger on the rim into July Oregon.
When to go
July–September when the rim road is fully open is the window most visitors aim for. Shoulder seasons mean fewer cars at trailheads. Winter can close roads; summer can fill parking lots by 8 a.m. Check NPS alerts the night before you drive in.
How to see it
Start with rim Drive with Watchman Overlook. Then a walk down to the water at Cleetwood Cove. If you have a second day, wizard Island if boats are running. Keep one spare hour for sunrise on the caldera before the buses.
Park practicalities
An America the Beautiful pass covers entry at most national parks. Timed-entry reservations are used at several busy parks in peak season — book those before lodging. Wildlife has the right of way; 25 yards from most animals, 100 yards from bears and wolves.
If you only remember this
- The lake is not a summer guarantee of bare roads. Check plow status before you go.
- Download offline maps. Cell service drops in most parks.
- Bring layers. Elevation and wind change the day faster than the forecast.
- Enter the park early. Famous lots and shuttles fill first.
