A traveler's guide to Dallas

Dallas rewards a car and a reservation. Walk one district a day. Do not try to stitch them together on foot.

Dallas is a business city that eats very well and keeps its art in a district you can actually walk. The skyline is the arrival. The trip is a neighborhood, a museum, and a dinner that justifies the drive across town.

When to go

Spring and fall are the outdoor months. Summer heat arrives early and stays. Winter is mild with the occasional ice day that shuts the city. Fair weeks and football weekends fill the hotels.

Neighborhoods

Downtown and the Arts District for culture. Deep Ellum at night. Bishop Arts for a stroll and a meal. Uptown if you want to walk to dinner from the hotel. Fort Worth is a separate day, not a footnote.

Eating

Tex-Mex, barbecue, and a dining room that still believes in service. The burger and the chicken-fried steak are local languages. Eat them where the room is not a concept.

If you only remember this

  • A car is the default.
  • Toll roads are everywhere. Bring a card.
  • Book dinner. The good rooms fill.
  • Summer midday is for museums, not patios.
