A traveler's guide to Fiji
Fiji is a beach country, not one beach. Pick a gateway (Nadi), a first island, and a slower second. The water is the trip.
U.S. News ranked Fiji the world's best beach destination for 2026: 333 islands, still-clear water, and resorts that range from village-simple to overwater. The Mamanucas and Yasawas are the postcard; Taveuni is the snorkeler's island.
Where to base
The Mamanucas are the easy postcard and a short boat from Denarau. The Yasawas are longer and quieter. Taveuni and the outer islands are for people who came to snorkel. Viti Levu's Coral Coast is convenient and less magical.
In the water
Fringing reefs drop off fast. Wear something on your feet, listen to the boat crew about current, and give coral the distance it is not getting from everyone else. Sea turtles show up if you are patient, not if you chase them.
On land
Village visits have a kava protocol. Sunday is quiet. Bring reef-safe sunscreen because the sun here is not a California sun.
If you only remember this
- Dry season (May–October) is the beach season. Cyclone months are a real calendar, not a rumor.
- The Fiji Gateway (Nadi) is a night in transit more often than a destination.
- Overwater bungalows exist; so do excellent cheaper bures a walk from the same lagoon.
- Cash still helps in villages. Cards win at resorts.
