The gateway arch monument in st. louis, missouri

A traveler's guide to Gateway Arch National Park

Gateway Arch National Park is a U.S. National Park in Missouri. The smallest national park, and the tallest monument in the U.S.

The Arch is the park. Ride to the top, walk the grounds on the Mississippi, and give the museum downstairs more time than the photo. It is a city park with a national park badge Missouri.

When to go

April–October is the window most visitors aim for. Shoulder seasons mean fewer cars at trailheads. Winter can close roads; summer can fill parking lots by 8 a.m. Check NPS alerts the night before you drive in.

How to see it

Start with tram to the top with a timed ticket. Then museum under the Arch. If you have a second day, riverfront walk at dusk. Keep one spare hour for old Courthouse if it is open on your day.

Park practicalities

An America the Beautiful pass covers entry at most national parks. Timed-entry reservations are used at several busy parks in peak season — book those before lodging. Wildlife has the right of way; 25 yards from most animals, 100 yards from bears and wolves.

If you only remember this

  • Book the tram. Walk-up tickets disappear on weekends and holidays.
  • Download offline maps. Cell service drops in most parks.
  • Bring layers. Elevation and wind change the day faster than the forecast.
  • Enter the park early. Famous lots and shuttles fill first.
