A traveler's guide to Great Barrier Reef

Base in Cairns or Port Douglas. The reef is the appointment. The town is where you sleep and eat.

The Great Barrier Reef is not a beach you walk onto from a hotel towel. It is a day, or several, on a boat from Cairns or Port Douglas, in water that still holds more life than a photograph can suggest. Pick the operator the way you would pick a guide.

When to go

The dry months from June to October are the calm, clear window. Stinger season runs roughly November to May, and boats provide suits. Cyclone season is a real calendar.

The beach

There is no single beach called the reef. Cairns has a lagoon pool because the town shore is mudflat. The sand you want, if you want sand, is Palm Cove, Trinity, or Four Mile at Port Douglas, on the days you are not on the boat.

In the water

Outer-reef trips are longer and usually clearer. A smaller boat beats a floating city if you get seasick or want a guide who knows your name. Do not stand on coral. The briefings are not theater.

If you only remember this

  • Book the reef day before you book anything optional.
  • Seasickness medicine the night before if you are unsure.
  • A stinger suit is normal. Wear it.
  • Flying foxes in Cairns are a dusk event, not a problem to solve.
