A traveler's guide to Kuala Lumpur

Go hungry and expect rain. KL is a food city that happens to have a famous skyline.

Kuala Lumpur is a crossroads that shows up in the food first: Malay, Chinese, Indian, and the combinations that happen when they share a street. The towers are the photograph. The meal under the awning is the reason to stay an extra night.

When to go

It is hot always. June to August is slightly drier. Afternoon thunderstorms are a near-daily appointment the rest of the year. Haze can visit. The city is indoors a lot, which suits the food.

Neighborhoods

Bukit Bintang and the towers for the first night. Chinatown and the colonial core in the morning. Kampung Baru for Malay food and a wooden scale the skyline denies. Batu Caves as a half-day. The malls are air-conditioned public squares. Use them without guilt.

Eating

Nasi lemak, char kway teow, banana-leaf rice, and a bowl of noodles at 11 p.m. The variety is the attraction. Follow families. A restaurant with a view of the towers is optional.

If you only remember this

  • Grab or the train. Traffic is slow.
  • Cover shoulders for the caves and mosques.
  • Afternoon rain is brief and complete.
  • The transit card is worth it.
