Tower Bridge over the River Thames with modern skyscrapers in London

A traveler's guide to London

Do not try to see London. Pick a river walk, a museum, a neighborhood, and a pub. The rest will happen on the way.

London is a collection of villages that share a Tube map. You come for the history and stay because a park appeared in the middle of the day, a museum did not charge you, and dinner could be anything on earth. Grey skies are part of the deal; so are pubs with a fire.

Neighborhoods

Soho and Covent Garden for first-timers. Hackney and Dalston for food. Kensington for museums. Brixton and Peckham for energy. Stay where you want to eat at 10 p.m., not next to a landmark you will visit once.

Museums

The big nationals are free: British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern, V&A, Natural History. Paid exhibitions are extra. The British Library and Sir John Soane's Museum are the quieter flexes.

Practical

Contactless on the Tube, buses, and trains inside the city. An Oyster is optional. Trains to Bath, Oxford, and Cambridge are easy day trips. It will rain. Pack for it and ignore it.

If you only remember this

  • Pubs can refuse to serve food in the last hour. Eat earlier than you think.
  • Theatre: today-T or lottery tickets beat paying full West End prices.
  • Sunday roast is a religion. Book it.
  • Tipping is not American-style; 10–12.5% in restaurants is common.
