A traveler's guide to Los Angeles

Pick a coast day and an east-side day. Trying to cross the basin at 5 p.m. is how a good city becomes a windshield.

Los Angeles is not a downtown you finish in a day. It is Santa Monica in the morning, a museum on Miracle Mile, tacos in Koreatown, and a canyon drive when the marine layer lifts. The distances are real. The neighborhoods are the trip.

When to go

Spring and fall are warm without the August heat. June often sits under gray mornings that burn off by noon. Winter is green in the hills and fine for walking. Summer weekends at the beach need an early start.

Neighborhoods

Santa Monica and Venice for the shore. Los Feliz, Silver Lake, and Highland Park for streets you can actually stroll. Downtown is better at night around the Arts District than as a full day. Pasadena is a separate trip.

Eating

Tacos, Korean barbecue, and a farmers-market lunch will beat a celebrity restaurant. Grand Central Market is useful once. The better meal is a strip-mall room that is full at 7.

If you only remember this

  • A car helps, and so does staying in one neighborhood at night.
  • Rideshares surge at dinner and after shows.
  • Book the Getty and Griffith around clear-sky forecasts.
  • Parking signs are serious. Read the curb.
