A traveler's guide to Megève

Come to Megève to ski well without spending the week frightened. The village is the other reservation you are making.

Megève is the ski resort for people who want a real French village and a kinder mountain. Mont d'Arbois and Rochebrune are the two sides. The Évasion Mont-Blanc link runs toward Saint-Gervais. It is not Chamonix and it is not trying to be. The week is pistes, lunch, and the church square.

When to go

February has the best chance of cover. Megève is not high, so a warm spell shows. January can ski beautifully after a cold storm and look tired after rain. March afternoons are the pleasant ones when the snow has held. Holiday weekends fill the lunch terraces.

On the hill

The skiing is intermediate on purpose. Mont d'Arbois is the larger side, Rochebrune the town-facing one, and a day out through Le Jaillet reaches the wider Évasion Mont-Blanc area. That link is worth one day and does not turn Megève into a steep resort. Stay on marked runs. The views of Mont Blanc are the scenery, not an invitation onto a glacier.

Village and passes

The center is the point: church, snowy streets, shops, dinner. Stay in walking distance if you can. A horse-drawn sleigh is optional theater; the walking is not. Lift passes can be bought for Megève alone or for the wider link. Buy the wider one only for the day you will use it. Book the lunch you were promised by every photograph, because everyone else saw the photograph too.

If you only remember this

  • This is not a high resort. Check the snow, not only the village photo.
  • Mont d'Arbois and Rochebrune are the two local days.
  • The Mont Blanc link is a day trip, not a reason to skip lunch in town.
  • Stay in the center. A cheaper bed on the road wastes the village.
