A traveler's guide to Mumbai
Mumbai is a working city that lets you watch. Do not expect it to slow down for a photograph. Eat well and pick one area a day.
Mumbai is density, ambition, and a harbor walk that still feels like a release. The colonial buildings are a morning. The city is the local train atmosphere, a seafood thali, and a night that starts late because everyone was working. Come ready for noise and appetite.
When to go
The cool, dry months from November to February are the time to walk. The monsoon is dramatic and flooding is real. Summer is hot and humid before the rains. Festival weeks are colorful and crowded.
Neighborhoods
The Fort and Colaba for the first architecture and the sea. Bandra and the western suburbs for a local night. The mill districts if you want contemporary galleries. Dharavi is a city inside the city. Go only with a responsible local organization, or do not go.
Eating
Vada pav, seafood if you are by the coast, a Parsi cafe if you find a real one, and sweets. Street food from busy stalls is the city's offer. Vegetarian rooms are some of the best meals, not a compromise.
If you only remember this
- Trains are the local miracle and intimidating at rush. Off-peak is kinder.
- Rideshares beat most taxis.
- Monsoon days need a flexible plan.
- Dress for heat and for air-conditioned rooms that overdo it.
