A traveler's guide to Munich
Oktoberfest is a specific trip. If that is not why you came, pick almost any other month and you will like the city more.
Munich is the German city people use as a base for the Alps and then discover they like for itself. Gardens, museums, and a river you can surf, oddly, in the middle of town. The beer is a culture, not a dare.
When to go
Late spring and early fall are ideal. Summer is warm and the gardens are the point. Winter is Christmas markets and cold nights. Late September is the festival: book everything or stay away.
Neighborhoods
The Marienplatz hour, then out. Schwabing and the English Garden for the afternoon. Glockenbach and the Westend for dinner. Nymphenburg if you want a palace with room to breathe. The Alps are a train, not a whim at 2 p.m.
Eating
Weisswurst before noon, a pretzel the size of a decision, and a beer garden lunch that is mostly radi and cheese. There is also serious cooking. You do not have to prove anything with a liter mug.
If you only remember this
- Transit covers the airport and the lakes.
- Beer gardens let you bring food and buy the drink. Learn the rule.
- Festival weeks have almost no spare rooms.
- A day in the mountains needs an early train and a weather check.
