A traveler's guide to Muscat

Use the winter months. Swim late in the day, and do not plan a midday walk on open sand.

Muscat's beach life is Qurum and a string of smaller sands between rocky headlands, with the Hajar mountains sitting closer than a beach city usually allows. The water is clear. The heat is the editor of your day. The wadis are the other Oman, after the swim.

When to go

October to March is warm and usable. Summer is extreme. The sea is swimmable in the season people actually come, and the city is built around that fact.

The beach

Qurum is the long public beach with a park behind it. Shatti Al Qurum is the more polished stretch. Beaches here are often pocket-sized between rock. Modest dress off the sand is the ordinary rule, and many beaches have designated swimming areas.

In the water

The Gulf of Oman is clear and often calm in the winter months. Snorkeling exists on the day boats toward the Daymaniyat islands, which is a plan you make, not a whim at noon. Shore swimming is the everyday version.

If you only remember this

  • Friday brings families. Go earlier on other days if you want space.
  • A car helps for the wadis. The beach does not require one.
  • Cover up away from the designated beach.
  • The rial is strong. The prices will say so.
