A traveler's guide to Nashville
Broadway after 9 p.m. is a theme. The city is the writers' rounds, the neighborhoods, and the food.
Nashville will sell you a pedal tavern and a neon guitar. Take the music seriously instead. Hear someone who can play, eat hot chicken or a biscuit with intent, and spend a morning in a neighborhood that is not printed on a shot glass.
When to go
Spring and fall are kind. Summer is hot and festival-heavy. Winter is gray and easier for last-minute shows. CMA weeks and graduation weekends sell out the obvious hotels.
Neighborhoods
Downtown for one night of neon. East Nashville for dinner and a quieter bar. 12 South and Germantown for walking. Music Row if you are nosy about the industry. The Gulch is convenient and a bit polished.
Eating
Hot chicken, meat-and-three, a serious biscuit, and barbecue that is not performing. Broadway bars sell fun. They rarely sell the best plate in town.
If you only remember this
- Book the Ryman or a small room before you fly.
- Rideshares after Broadway close are a long wait.
- A car helps outside the center.
- Heat levels on the chicken are not a joke. Order one step down.
