A traveler's guide to Okinawa

Treat Naha as the airport town. The beaches that make the ranking are a ferry or a short flight farther south.

Often called Japan's Hawaii, Okinawa is an archipelago of white sand and reef. The main island is easy; Miyako, Ishigaki, and the Keramas are why people extend the ticket. Shallow, bright water is the point.

Islands

The Keramas are the close, spectacular day trip. Miyako is flat and photogenic. Ishigaki and the Yaeyamas are for snorkeling people who will stay. The main island's beaches are fine and more developed.

When

Typhoons own late summer. Water is swimmable from roughly May through October. Winter is for walking beaches, not floating on them.

Practical

IC cards and convenience stores still work. Driving on the smaller islands is easy. Jellyfish nets appear in season — swim inside them.

If you only remember this

  • July and August are hot, humid, and busy with domestic travelers.
  • Reef shoes help. Coral cuts are how beach weeks end early.
  • Okinawan food (goya, pork, sea grapes) is the other reason to come.
  • Book Kerama ferries the day before in peak months.
