A traveler's guide to Phu Quoc
Stay on the west coast for the sunset and the swim. Visit the north. Do not try to see the whole island between lunch and dinner.
Phu Quoc is the island off Cambodia's coast that Vietnam turned into a beach holiday. Long Beach is the wide west-coast sand. The north is quieter. The night market in Duong Dong is the evening that is not a resort buffet. It is an easy week, and the sea is warm.
When to go
November to April is dry and the swimming season. May to October is greener and wetter, and the west-coast sea gets less friendly. Tet week is domestic high season.
The beach
Long Beach runs for kilometers south of the town, a mix of public sand and resort frontage. Sao Beach on the southeast is the other famous crescent and a day trip. The sand is pale. Chairs are inexpensive. Sunset faces the right way on the west.
In the water
Dry-season swimming off Long Beach is simple. A snorkel trip to the small islands is a calm-morning plan and a poor one in the windy months. Jellyfish happen. Ask the hotel, not the brochure.
If you only remember this
- The airport is in the middle of the island. Distances look shorter than the traffic.
- A scooter is the local habit and a real risk if you do not ride at home.
- The night market is for dinner, not for a performance.
- Cash and QR payments both work. The smaller boats like cash.
