A traveler's guide to Punta Cana

Decide if you want the gate or the town. Both can see the same water. They do not feel like the same week.

Punta Cana is the Caribbean arranged as a resort coast. The beach is wide, the palms are planted in rows, and the water on a calm day is the postcard. It is easy on purpose. The country beyond the gates is a different trip you can still choose.

When to go

December to April is drier. Summer is hot, humid, and cheaper, and it is when afternoon storms and the occasional seaweed week show up. The sea stays warm.

The beach

The east-coast sand runs for miles, split by resort after resort. Some stretches are public. Some feel private because the only gate faces the lobby. Ask. The water is generally calm and shallow for a long way.

In the water

Shore swimming is the product. A snorkel trip has to go farther than the first buoy to find reef. Catamarans are the social version of a boat day. Sargassum can bury a beach in some summers and spare it in others.

If you only remember this

  • The airport is close, which is the luxury.
  • Excursions to Saona are a long, popular day. Go early in the week.
  • Pesos spend better in town than at the lobby desk.
  • A day outside the resort is how the country becomes visible.
