A traveler's guide to Sanya

Come for the winter sun. Book the bay you actually want to wake up on, because the traffic between them is not scenic.

Sanya is where the country goes when the north is grey. Yalong Bay is the long, managed crescent. The town is built for holidays, which means the sand is real, the resorts are large, and Golden Week is a different density entirely.

When to go

November to March is the point: dry, warm, and full of people escaping winter. Summer is hotter, wetter, and still busy. Avoid the national holiday weeks if you can move your dates.

The beach

Yalong is the polished one, with a public stretch and a lot of hotel frontage. Dadonghai is more city. Haitang is newer and wider. The sand is pale and the water is a proper swim in winter, which is the trick.

In the water

Winter seas are usually friendly. Summer can bring surf and the occasional closure. Snorkel trips head to nearby bays and to the West Island side. A life jacket culture is normal on the tour boats.

If you only remember this

  • Sanya Phoenix is the close airport. Haikou is the long way.
  • Hotel beaches and public beaches sit next to each other. Ask where you may put a towel.
  • Mandarin will carry you. English is uneven outside the big hotels.
  • Seafood dinners are priced by the jin. Confirm the weight before it hits the grill.
