A traveler's guide to Semporna
Treat Semporna as the harbor. Sleep where the boat leaves, and spend the money on the day the permit is for.
Semporna is a working town on the Sabah coast. The trip is the islands off it: Sipadan if you have a permit, Mabul if you want muck and a pier, Kapalai if you want the postcard sandbar. The town itself is the ferry, the market, and the night you wait for the boat.
When to go
Visibility is kindest outside the heaviest monsoon months. April to June and a stretch in the early autumn are the windows divers trade stories about. Wind still cancels boats.
The beach
The town waterfront is not the beach. Mabul has a village, a few resorts, and water you enter from a ladder. Kapalai is a sandbar with rooms. Sipadan is a visit, not a place you stay.
In the water
Sipadan permits are capped. If the itinerary does not name the permit, you do not have one. Currents on the famous sites are for certified divers. Snorkel trips still exist and should be honest about the drift.
If you only remember this
- Tawau is the usual airport, then an hour and a half by road.
- Cash in town. Cards at the resorts that take them.
- Ask which day is Sipadan before you celebrate the booking.
- The seaweed farms around Mabul are someone's work. Give them room.
