A traveler's guide to Seychelles

Two islands are enough. Three is a ferry itinerary. La Digue is the one you should not skip if the famous beach is the reason.

The Seychelles are a handful of granitic islands with beaches that look assembled. Anse Source d'Argent on La Digue is the famous one, pinkish sand between boulders. Mahé and Praslin are where the week is based. It is expensive, slow, and visually unfair.

When to go

The turn of the seasons, around April to May and October to November, is the calmer bet. Rain is short and scenic most of the year. Wind picks the beach that works each day.

The beach

Source d'Argent is on La Digue and is reached through an old plantation, often with a fee. Anse Lazio is Praslin's big, beautiful bay and it has weather. Mahé's Beau Vallon is the city beach, useful and less delicate. The sand really is that pale.

In the water

Swimming is excellent in the sheltered coves and a conversation with the lifeguard when the swell is up. Snorkeling on a house reef is ordinary here. A glass-bottom or a small boat fills a day without a checklist.

If you only remember this

  • Ferries between Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue are the transport. Book the popular hours.
  • La Digue is bicycles. That is not a slogan.
  • Prices are high. The picnic from a shop is a respected plan.
  • Take the photo early. The boulders are smaller when a hundred people are among them.
