A traveler's guide to Sydney
The harbor is the organizing idea. Sleep near a ferry and you will understand the city faster than from a downtown hotel alone.
Sydney is the opera house and also a string of beaches and ferries that locals use as buses. See the harbor once from the water. Then pick a neighborhood and a swim. The city is outdoors more often than its postcard suggests.
When to go
The long warm season from October into April is when the beaches make sense. Winter is mild, bright, and good for walking, with cold water. Christmas is high summer and high prices. Whale season is a bonus offshore, not a plan you can schedule tightly.
Neighborhoods
Circular Quay for the arrival. The Rocks early. Surry Hills and Newtown for food. Bondi or another beach if you want the swim. Manly by ferry if the trip is the point. The Blue Mountains are a separate day.
Eating
Seafood, coffee that is taken seriously, and Asian kitchens at a high level. The harbor restaurants sell the view. Eat one meal for the view and the rest where the room cares about the fish.
If you only remember this
- Opal card for ferries, trains, and buses.
- Sun is stronger than it feels. Hat and sunscreen.
- Swim between the flags.
- Ferries beat cars for many harbor trips.
