A traveler's guide to Tel Aviv

Stay near the sea if the beach is the reason. The city inland is excellent and a bus ride, not a loss.

Tel Aviv treats the beach as infrastructure. The promenade runs the length of the city, the sand is wide and public, and people swim before the workday the way other cities ride a train. It is a city that happens to face a warm sea.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the humane months. Summer is hot, humid, and the beach's high season. Winter is swimmable for locals and brisk for everyone else, with dramatic light.

The beach

The beaches are numbered by habit and by lifeguard stand. Gordon, Frishman, and Banana are the central ones. The sand is public. Chairs are a rental. Shabbat changes the city more than it closes the beach.

In the water

The Mediterranean here has a real wave some days and a flat calm on others. Swim between the flags. Lifeguards are seasonal and serious. A surf lesson is normal in the right month, not a gimmick.

If you only remember this

  • The sand is hot by noon in summer. Go early or go late.
  • Friday afternoon the promenade belongs to the whole city.
  • Jaffa is a walk, not a transfer.
  • Rinse the salt. The evening plan will thank you.
