Scenic view of snow-covered mountains and trees in Telluride, Colorado during winter.

A traveler's guide to Telluride

Decide whether you are sleeping in the canyon town or up in Mountain Village. The gondola connects them. It does not make them the same place.

Telluride is the ski resort in a Colorado box canyon, with the old town at one end and Mountain Village at the other. The gondola between them is free and it runs into the evening. The skiing sits above that ride. Revelation Bowl is the high terrain. The town is the part you remember when you are not skiing.

When to go

January through March. Telluride's San Juan storms can be huge, and they can also miss. Midwinter weeks are the booking. The town is small and festival dates fill it for reasons that have nothing to do with snow. Check the calendar before you assume a quiet street.

On the hill

The main skiing faces several directions around the ridge between town and Mountain Village. Intermediates get long groomed runs. Revelation Bowl and the Gold Hill side are the expert morning, and they close when the snow and the visibility are wrong. The free gondola is town transport and also a scenic ride; the ski lifts are a separate map above it. Do not duck ropes. The canyon walls are beautiful and they are not a run.

Village and passes

Telluride town is the walkable one, in the canyon, with the restaurants. Mountain Village is the ski-in base at the top of the gondola, quieter at night. Montrose is the practical airport. The local airstrip on the mesa is a short flight for small planes and a poor plan in weather. A car is optional if you commit to one base and the gondola. Groceries and a big shop happen before you drive into the canyon.

If you only remember this

  • Fly into Montrose unless you already know the mesa airport.
  • The town gondola is free and it is not the whole ski area.
  • Revelation Bowl is a weather call. Have another morning ready.
  • Festival weeks book the town. Look at the dates.
