A traveler's guide to Universal Studios Beijing

Universal Beijing is a full theme park day east of the city. Ride Harry Potter early and leave time to get back before you are stuck in Tongzhou traffic.

Universal Studios Beijing is the theme park in Tongzhou, east of central Beijing. The Wizarding World, Jurassic World, and Transformers Metrobase are the lands. It is a large, new gate and it wants a full day, with the city on either side of it.

When to go

Spring and autumn. Winters are cold and dry, summers are hot, and Chinese public holidays fill the gate. A clear weekday in May or October is the target. Pollution days are a real reason to move a date.

How to see it

Harry Potter first, then Transformers or Jurassic depending on which line broke the other way. Kung Fu Panda and Minion Land are the easier afternoon. The park is big and the walks between lands are part of the day. The nighttime lagoon show is the closer if you can still face the ride home.

Tickets and time

Buy ahead on a Chinese platform or the official channel and check the ID rules for entry. Express is useful on holiday weeks and optional on a quiet weekday if you rope-drop the castle. A hotel in Tongzhou makes the morning kinder than a cross-town taxi.

If you only remember this

  • Central Beijing is not next door. Budget the transfer.
  • The rides do not require Mandarin. The app and the tickets might.
  • Holiday weeks are a different park. Avoid them if you can move the date.
  • One strong Beijing day and one park day is a better trip than two exhausted park days.
