A traveler's guide to Voyageurs National Park
Voyageurs National Park is a U.S. National Park in Minnesota. A water park of lakes, islands, and houseboats on the Canadian border.
You need a boat. Rainy, Kabetogama, and Namakan are the stage. In winter it becomes a snowmobile and ice road park. Summer is loons, walleye, and campsites you reach by water Minnesota.
When to go
June–September; February for ice is the window most visitors aim for. Shoulder seasons mean fewer cars at trailheads. Winter can close roads; summer can fill parking lots by 8 a.m. Check NPS alerts the night before you drive in.
How to see it
Start with a boat from Ash River, Kabetogama, or Rainy Lake. Then kettle Falls if you can get there. If you have a second day, houseboat night on the water. Keep one spare hour for a ranger-led trip if you did not bring a boat.
Park practicalities
An America the Beautiful pass covers entry at most national parks. Timed-entry reservations are used at several busy parks in peak season — book those before lodging. Wildlife has the right of way; 25 yards from most animals, 100 yards from bears and wolves.
If you only remember this
- This park does not work as a scenic drive. Rent a boat or join a tour.
- Download offline maps. Cell service drops in most parks.
- Bring layers. Elevation and wind change the day faster than the forecast.
- Enter the park early. Famous lots and shuttles fill first.
