When to go

Spring and fall are the patio months. Summer is a long heat. Winter is mild and good for BBQ lines that are slightly shorter. SXSW and the big race weekends change the whole city. Check the calendar.

Neighborhoods

Downtown and South Congress for the first look. East Austin for dinner and a younger night. Hyde Park and the north side if you want shade and a slower morning. The Domain is a mall. It is not the city.

Eating

Breakfast tacos are the civic ritual. Barbecue is worth one serious line. Tex-Mex, a beer on a patio, and Thai or Vietnamese in a strip center will round out a week better than a hotel steakhouse.

Barton Springs or the lake when it is warm enough. Best stretch: March–May. United States is expensive in the obvious places and generous if you leave the main square.
