A traveler's guide to Austin

Go for the music and the patios. Leave time to do very little between them. Austin punishes a packed spreadsheet.

Austin is the Texas city people visit for music and stay for the food and the water. Congress Avenue is the sketch. The trip is a taco breakfast, a swim if the season allows, and a show small enough that you can see the drummer's face.

When to go

Spring and fall are the patio months. Summer is a long heat. Winter is mild and good for BBQ lines that are slightly shorter. SXSW and the big race weekends change the whole city. Check the calendar.

Neighborhoods

Downtown and South Congress for the first look. East Austin for dinner and a younger night. Hyde Park and the north side if you want shade and a slower morning. The Domain is a mall. It is not the city.

Eating

Breakfast tacos are the civic ritual. Barbecue is worth one serious line. Tex-Mex, a beer on a patio, and Thai or Vietnamese in a strip center will round out a week better than a hotel steakhouse.

If you only remember this

  • A car is the honest way around, except inside downtown.
  • Rideshares surge after shows.
  • The springs have rules and a temperature. Read both.
  • Book festival weeks months ahead or stay outside them.
