Canyonlands National Park
A maze of canyons split by the Colorado and Green Rivers.
Island in the Sky is the easy mesa. The Needles take more time. The Maze is for people who already know what they are doing. Mesa Arch at sunrise is the photograph everyone copies, and still worth it Utah.

Field guide
Canyonlands National Park is a U.S. National Park in Utah. A maze of canyons split by the Colorado and Green Rivers.
When to go
March–May, September–October is the window most visitors aim for. Shoulder seasons mean fewer cars at trailheads. Winter can close roads; summer can fill parking lots by 8 a.m. Check NPS alerts the night before you drive in.
How to see it
Start with mesa Arch at sunrise. Then grand View Point and Green River Overlook. If you have a second day, needles if you have a second day and a capable car. Keep one spare hour for dead Horse Point nearby for another rim.
Park practicalities
An America the Beautiful pass covers entry at most national parks. Timed-entry reservations are used at several busy parks in peak season — book those before lodging. Wildlife has the right of way; 25 yards from most animals, 100 yards from bears and wolves.
Pack this in your notes
- Island in the Sky is not the whole park. Distances between districts are huge.
- Download offline maps. Cell service drops in most parks.
- Bring layers. Elevation and wind change the day faster than the forecast.
- Enter the park early. Famous lots and shuttles fill first.

8/10Canyonlands National Park is bigger than the postcard
Grand View Point and Green River Overlook. A maze of canyons split by the Colorado and Green Rivers. Crowds thin if you are moving at first light. March–May, September–October is the window I would book again.

10/10Start early in Canyonlands National Park
Mesa Arch at sunrise. Grand View Point and Green River Overlook. Give Canyonlands National Park days, not hours, and go in March–May. The trailhead line is the tax; the quiet after it is the park.
