Grand Canyon National Park
A mile-deep canyon that still stops people who thought they were prepared.
The South Rim is the public park: viewpoints, mule trains, and a sunset that justifies the crowds. The North Rim is higher, shorter-season, and quieter. The river is a different trip entirely Arizona.

Field guide
Grand Canyon National Park is a U.S. National Park in Arizona. A mile-deep canyon that still stops people who thought they were prepared.
When to go
March–May, September–November on the South Rim is the window most visitors aim for. Shoulder seasons mean fewer cars at trailheads. Winter can close roads; summer can fill parking lots by 8 a.m. Check NPS alerts the night before you drive in.
How to see it
Start with south Rim trail between Mather and Hopi Points. Then sunset at Hopi or Desert View. If you have a second day, a walk below the rim only as far as you can climb back. Keep one spare hour for desert View Watchtower if you drive east.
Park practicalities
An America the Beautiful pass covers entry at most national parks. Timed-entry reservations are used at several busy parks in peak season — book those before lodging. Wildlife has the right of way; 25 yards from most animals, 100 yards from bears and wolves.
Pack this in your notes
- Going down is optional. Coming up is not. Heat kills people on inner-canyon day hikes.
- Download offline maps. Cell service drops in most parks.
- Bring layers. Elevation and wind change the day faster than the forecast.
- Enter the park early. Famous lots and shuttles fill first.

10/10Do not go below if you cannot climb
South Rim sunset was enough. Watched people stagger up Bright Angel at 4 p.m. and stayed on the rim.

10/10Grand Canyon National Park is bigger than the postcard
Sunset at Hopi or Desert View. A mile-deep canyon that still stops people who thought they were prepared. Crowds thin if you are moving at first light. March–May, September–November on the South Rim is the window I would book again.

8/10Start early in Grand Canyon National Park
South Rim trail between Mather and Hopi Points. Sunset at Hopi or Desert View. Give Grand Canyon National Park days, not hours, and go in March–May. The trailhead line is the tax; the quiet after it is the park.
