Cartagena
A Caribbean walled city of color, heat, and long lunches.
Cartagena is a walled colonial city on the Caribbean that is exactly as pretty as people say, and hotter. Wander early. Hide in a courtyard at midday. Eat fish. The Getsemaní neighborhood is the evening. The islands are a boat day you should mean.

Field guide
Morning and evening are the city. Midday is for shade, a slow lunch, and not being heroic.
When to go
December to March is drier and busy, including holiday prices. The rest of the year is greener, wetter, and still hot. Humidity is the constant. Cruise-ship hours fill the old streets and then release them.
Neighborhoods
Inside the walls for the first day, early. Getsemaní for dinner and a younger night. Bocagrande is high-rises and beach clubs, a different trip. The rosary islands are a long, sunny boat day. Decide if you want that before you give it a calendar square.
Eating
Fried fish, coconut rice, a lime-and-seafood cocktail, and tropical fruit. The prettiest plaza restaurants are not always the best. A courtyard two streets away usually is. Drink water with everything.
Pack this in your notes
- Sun and humidity. Hat, water, and a midday pause.
- Street sellers are persistent. A friendly no is enough.
- The old city is walkable. Heels on the stones are not.
- Boat trips: confirm what is included before you board.

8/10Cartagena is a walking city
Getsemaní in the evening. A boat day only if the water, not another church, is the goal. A Caribbean walled city of color, heat, and long lunches. Eat where the room is full of locals and give Cartagena more evenings than museums.

6/10A neighborhood week in Cartagena
A courtyard lunch out of the sun. Best stretch: December–March. Colombia is expensive in the obvious places and generous if you leave the main square.
