Machu Picchu
The citadel in the clouds, earned by train, trail, or both.
Machu Picchu is a place you approach. Cusco's altitude, the Sacred Valley's terraces, a train along the Urubamba, then the stone city in the mist. It is crowded at the classic viewpoint and still capable of silence if you take the first bus.

A Machu Picchu itinerary
Tell us how long you have. If a SpaceXAI key is configured, Grok writes the plan. Otherwise you get an editor-built outline from the field guide.
Field guide
The ruin is the headline. The trip is altitude, logistics, and the valley. Build two days in Cusco before you go up. Tickets are timed and limited. Plan like it is a permit, because it is.
Tickets and routes
Buy official entry in advance and pick a circuit. The classic Inca Trail needs a permit months ahead. Salkantay and other treks are alternatives. Most visitors take the train to Aguas Calientes and the bus at dawn.
Altitude
Cusco sits above 3,400 meters. Walk slowly, drink water, skip the first night's pisco. Coca tea is traditional; acetazolamide is a conversation with a doctor, not a souvenir.
Around the citadel
The Sacred Valley (Pisac, Ollantaytambo) is not filler. Ollantaytambo is one of the best-preserved Inca towns and a smarter last night than rushing from Cusco at 4 a.m.
Pack this in your notes
- There are no bathrooms inside the citadel. Go before you enter.
- Drones, tripods, and large bags are restricted. Check the current rules.
- Rain can close trails. Dry season is easier, not guaranteed.
- Carry your passport; it is checked at entry.

10/10First bus wins
Aguas Calientes the night before, first bus, mist lifting off the terraces. Acclimatize in Cusco. The altitude is not a rumor.

10/10Machu Picchu is bigger than the postcard
A night in the Sacred Valley to acclimatize. The citadel in the clouds, earned by train, trail, or both. Crowds thin if you are moving at first light. May–September (dry season) is the window I would book again.

8/10Start early in Machu Picchu
First buses up from Aguas Calientes. A night in the Sacred Valley to acclimatize. Give Machu Picchu days, not hours, and go in May–September (dry season). The trailhead line is the tax; the quiet after it is the park.
