The ancient stone ruins of Machu Picchu nestled among lush green mountains in Peru

A traveler's guide to Machu Picchu

The ruin is the headline. The trip is altitude, logistics, and the valley. Build two days in Cusco before you go up. Tickets are timed and limited. Plan like it is a permit, because it is.

Machu Picchu is a place you approach. Cusco's altitude, the Sacred Valley's terraces, a train along the Urubamba, then the stone city in the mist. It is crowded at the classic viewpoint and still capable of silence if you take the first bus.

Tickets and routes

Buy official entry in advance and pick a circuit. The classic Inca Trail needs a permit months ahead. Salkantay and other treks are alternatives. Most visitors take the train to Aguas Calientes and the bus at dawn.

Altitude

Cusco sits above 3,400 meters. Walk slowly, drink water, skip the first night's pisco. Coca tea is traditional; acetazolamide is a conversation with a doctor, not a souvenir.

Around the citadel

The Sacred Valley (Pisac, Ollantaytambo) is not filler. Ollantaytambo is one of the best-preserved Inca towns and a smarter last night than rushing from Cusco at 4 a.m.

If you only remember this

  • There are no bathrooms inside the citadel. Go before you enter.
  • Drones, tripods, and large bags are restricted. Check the current rules.
  • Rain can close trails. Dry season is easier, not guaranteed.
  • Carry your passport; it is checked at entry.
