Marrakech

Pink walls, spice-scented alleys, and riads that make the medina make sense.

Marrakech is sensory on purpose: the call to prayer, orange-blossom courtyards, tanneries, gardens, and a square that never really sleeps. Stay in a riad, get lost once on purpose, and take a day into the Atlas or the Agafay if the medina starts to close in.

A Marrakech itinerary

Tell us how long you have. If a SpaceXAI key is configured, Grok writes the plan. Otherwise you get an editor-built outline from the field guide.

Field guide

The medina is the trip. A good riad is not a luxury, it is orientation: a quiet courtyard you can return to after the souks. Hire a guide for half a day, then wander without one.

The medina

Jemaa el-Fnaa is theatre. The souks behind it are the real map. Bargain with humor. You do not have to buy. A guide helps the first morning; after that, pin your riad on your phone.

Beyond the walls

The Jardin Majorelle is small and popular — book timed entry. The palmeraie, Agafay, and Ourika Valley are easy day trips. Essaouira is the cooler coastal reset if you have extra nights.

Eating

Tagine is the cliché because it works. Try street pancakes (mhadjeb), fresh orange juice, and a rooftop at dusk. Drink bottled water. Many riads serve an excellent dinner if you book it.

Pack this in your notes

  • Dress for a conservative city: covered shoulders help in the medina.
  • Friday is the holy day; some places slow down.
  • ATMs inside the medina can be picky. Get dirhams in the ville nouvelle too.
  • Unsolicited 'guides' will appear. A firm no is enough.

Get a riad with a courtyard

The medina is intense in the best way. A quiet riad made it a holiday instead of a scramble. Majorelle is small — book it.

Slow down in Marrakech

Jardin Majorelle and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum. I would go again in March–May, skip the checklist, and stay for one neighborhood.

Marrakech at opening time

A riad courtyard at breakfast, before the heat. Jardin Majorelle and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum. In Morocco the site is the appointment; the streets around it are the trip. Pink walls, spice-scented alleys, and riads that make the medina make sense.
