Queenstown

A lake town with Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, and Cardrona for the ski days.

Queenstown is the ski resort trip on the southern lakes of New Zealand. Coronet Peak and The Remarkables are the two ski resorts above the lake, and Cardrona is the day you drive toward Wanaka. The town is the base, the season is the southern winter, and the skiing is real even though the vertical is not Alpine.

Field guide

You sleep in Queenstown and drive to the snow. Pick one ski resort each day. The town is good enough to absorb a closed morning.

When to go

July through September. New Zealand snow varies by the year more than a high Alpine resort does. Coronet Peak has snowmaking and is the reliable door. August is the heart of the season. Spring weeks in September can be excellent and they can be wet. Book a week so one thin day does not decide it.

On the hill

Coronet Peak is the quick morning from town and the most straightforward skiing. The Remarkables is a bigger view and a longer drive, with terrain that feels more serious when the cover is good. Cardrona, up the Crown Range toward Wanaka, is the third resort and many people's favorite day. None of them is a Trois Vallées. They are well-run ski resorts with learners, groomers, and real off-piste when the snow is there. A storm can close one and leave another open. Have a second choice.

Village and passes

Stay in Queenstown. The lake, the restaurants, and the airport are the base, not the lift plaza. You will want a car, or a booked shuttle, for every ski day. The Crown Range to Cardrona is a mountain road. Chains and a calm driver matter when it is snowing. A single-resort pass is fine for one day; a multi-day card makes sense only if you know you will move. The town has plenty to do when the hills are shut, which is a feature.

Pack this in your notes

  • This is a southern-hemisphere winter. July, August, September.
  • Coronet Peak is the closest. The Remarkables and Cardrona are drives.
  • A car is the practical lift pass between the three.
  • The town saves a closed day. Do not fly in for a single ski morning.

First chair at Queenstown

Cardrona as the longer day toward Wanaka. The town in the evening, which carries the trip if a storm closes a hill. Book the week for the snow, and go in July–September. A lake town with Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, and Cardrona for the ski days.

Queenstown on a clear morning

The Remarkables for the view back at the lake. The lift line is the tax; the run after it is the reason. July–September is the window I would book again.
