Shenzhen
A new city on a bay, built fast and serious about design and dinner.
Shenzhen is not a historic capital and does not pretend to be. It is a bay, a skyline, and some of the best eating in southern China, an hour from Hong Kong if the border is kind. Come for the contemporary city: galleries, night markets, and a waterfront that locals actually use.

Field guide
Judge Shenzhen as a living city, not as a missing old town. The pleasure is food, new architecture, and how fast the place learned to be a place.
When to go
Winter and early spring are the comfortable months. Summer is very hot and wet, with typhoons in the forecast from time to time. The lunar new year changes restaurant hours.
Neighborhoods
Nanshan and the bay for the waterfront. Futian for the civic center and malls that are almost neighborhoods. Dongmen if you want an older commercial scramble. OCT for design and a slower afternoon. The border crossings are a project with rules.
Eating
Cantonese seafood, Chaozhou braises, and the range of Chinese kitchens that followed the people who built the city. Malls have serious restaurants here. So do the streets. Follow a full room.
Pack this in your notes
- Metro is excellent.
- Summer heat is a midday constraint.
- Hong Kong is close and not casual. Check entry rules.
- English is limited outside hotels and big malls.

10/10Shenzhen is a walking city
Cantonese seafood or a Chaozhou meal. A day over the boundary only if the paperwork is already boringly ready. A new city on a bay, built fast and serious about design and dinner. Eat where the room is full of locals and give Shenzhen more evenings than museums.

8/10A neighborhood week in Shenzhen
A design or contemporary art stop, then a long dinner. Best stretch: November–March. China is expensive in the obvious places and generous if you leave the main square.
