Zermatt
A car-free village under the Matterhorn, with glacier skiing above the rooftops.
Zermatt is the ski resort the Matterhorn made famous. The village is car-free, the trains stop the road at Täsch, and the lifts climb to the Klein Matterhorn. On a clear day the Italian side at Cervinia is a real ski day, not a postcard. Book the village, then ski up.

A Zermatt itinerary
Tell us how long you have. If a SpaceXAI key is configured, Grok writes the plan. Otherwise you get an editor-built outline from the field guide.
Field guide
Treat Zermatt as a train trip with a big vertical. The skiing is high and the village is the evening. Do not plan to drive to the hotel door.
When to go
January through March is the winter to book. December can be thin on the lower slopes and excellent up high. The glacier stays open outside the main winter, which is a different, quieter trip. Storm days close the top; keep a village day in the plan.
On the hill
Ride up early. The Matterhorn views and the glacier are the morning, and the lower runs back to the village are the afternoon. The link toward Cervinia depends on weather and the border crossing. It is worth doing once when it is open, with the passport you were told to bring. Marked pistes are enough for a great week. Anything off them needs a guide.
Village and passes
Cars end at Täsch. The shuttle train is the arrival, including with skis. Electric taxis cover the village. A Swiss lift pass is not the Italian pass; ask which one includes the day you want before you buy the week. Dinners book out in February. Stay in the village if you want to walk home.
Pack this in your notes
- The road ends at Täsch. Build the train into the arrival, not as a surprise.
- The top closes in wind. Have a lower-mountain plan.
- Cervinia is another country for the afternoon. Carry the passport.
- February is the crowded, reliable month. Early March is often the better week.

10/10Zermatt on a clear morning
Klein Matterhorn and the Glacier Paradise snow. The lift line is the tax; the run after it is the reason. January–March; glacier skiing into summer is the window I would book again.
